In July 2010, the United Nations recognized the right to universal access to water. Currently, nearly 900 million people worldwide lack access to improved water sources, over 300 million of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa.

As it did with the Cotonou Declaration against falsified medicines launched in October 2009, the Fondation Chirac, with the hemp of the Republic of Mali, organizes on October 17 and 18, 2011, in Bamako, the Forum for”Solidarity for water in Niger Basin countries”.

Starting with a progress report of achievements since the 2004 Paris Declaration, the Forum will seek to :

1. Highlight and promote operational solutions to meet the challenges of access to water and sanitation, exemplary field efforts, and successful programs in the region but also throughout the African continent.

2. Call to mind the importance of increased mobilization around the Niger Basin Authority to promote the strengthening of transboundary cooperation for the balanced and sustainable development and management of shared water resources.

3. Promote innovative funding dedicated to providing access to water.

4. Accompany the region’s countries in the ratification of the UN Convention on International Watercourses (1997).

This high level Forum will bring together heads of state, African officials, heads of international and regional organizations, and the World Water Council. It will also bring together representatives of NGOs and fields of development ; donors ; etc.

It will consist of lectures ; workshops ; panel discussions ; and a show room displaying original ideas, innovative projects, and best practices.
